Hurricane Earl has prompted the Bay Shore-based Fire Island Ferries to suspend ferry service after 3 p.m. today. The Sayville Ferry Company has cancelled the 7 p.m. 8 p.m. and midnight ferries to the Fire Island Pines and the midnight ferry to Cherry Grove.

An intriguing option for someone wanting to purchase a home on Fire Island is to buy a "fixer upper" and renovate the property, or to simply tear down the dated structure and start from scratch.
